Following on from last month’s missive on ‘Winter Whites’, a few mates have been asking about what reds they might need to order for Christmas Day, given it is only just over a week away.
Sticking with South Africa as a source of good value for money wine, here are two that are available form Berrys. Having checked with Berrys, if you place over the next couple of days, then it will be delivered before Christmas - however, always good to check - or have it ready for the New Year celebrations.
1 - 2019 Constantia Glen, Three, Constantia, South Africa
Berrys - £26.50 - available by the case or bottle.
I’ve been following this winery since visiting it a few years ago. A family run estate that produces a great collection of wines. This is a Bordeaux blend with around two-thirds Merlot and the balance being Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It is a very enticing and classic package, wonderfully constructed with cassis and plums on the nose, with bundles of length and elegance on the palate that would match turkey to perfection. The oak is gentle and the fresh fruit and acidity sit in perfect harmony. It’s a very easy brew to enjoy and settle in for the feast, and probably the afternoon. It’s designed to drink today but will keep for a couple of years.
2 - 2016 Keermont, Syrah, Stellenbosch, South Africa
Berrys - £26.50 - available by the case or bottle.
A new agency for Berrys, this has a few years under the belt and has made it a delightful red for current drinking if serving beef rather than turkey. It’s still feels young, and will certainly continue to mature for another decade, but it’s charm lies in the opulent palate. It just seems to say, ‘drink me’. There is a light touch of spice and black pepper on the finish, with notes of juicy cherries on the middle palate: this is a real delight, and very, very drinkable.
