Constantia Glen, Three, 2020

South Africa. 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc.

Grapes have been grown in the Constantia region since 1685. Cooling breezes lower overall temperatures as the coast is less than 7 miles away and create a high moderating, diurnal range. 2020 was an exceptional vintage with budburst and flowering worked to perfection following a warm and tranquil spring. Moderate temperatures during the summer ensured perfectly ripe grapes that were of excellent quality. This wine is made from three grape varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot - and hence the name ‘Three’. Larger-than-life winemaker, Justin van Wyk, has been with the winery since its second harvest and has consistently created an array of excellent wines from within the beautifully located region. Constantia is just south of Cape Town and wine tourism flourishes here, creating an important source of revenue for the small number of wineries located in this region.

Dark plums and cherries on the nose with a hint of oak showing through. Palate is fine with a structured balance of ripe fruits, medium-bodied herbal flavours, and very fine tannins. Lingering fruit of dark cherries, vanilla, and a touch of graphite make this a very enjoyable wine. Ready for immediate consumption to match a Sunday lunch of roast lamb or beef.
