You may have clocked that Waitrose is offering 25% off wines until 3rd June and have already bought some favourites.
However, I just wanted to flag 3 wines from South Africa that are at ‘normal’ pricing represent good value, but with the 25% deducted, then they are exceptional value for money and would fit in with summer dishes to perfection.
1 - Rustenberg John X Merriman 2022
£81.00 case of 6: equivalent of £13.50
If you enjoy a classic Bordeaux blend, and you are thinking about barbecued leg of lamb, then this would be an excellent combination. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec aged in oak, 35% new, for 20 months has allowed this wine to demonstrate how this estate can create an exceptional value-for-money red. Just a rich, classic mixture that is consistently well reviewed at a very competitive price.
2 - Rustenberg Five Soldiers Chardonnay 2023
£148.50 case of 6: equivalent £24.75
Named after five pine tress that dominate the vineyard site. Full-bodied, rich, complex and aged in 72% new oak. Lemon on the nose, with pronounced stone-fruits on the palate - apricot and peach - creating a perfect balance between acidity and layers of ripeness that has a tremendous finish. This will age gracefully, but is drinking incredibly well today. Serve this with poached salmon, coronation chicken and roast pork. It is a very classy glass of wine. Probably the favourite Chardonnay for this summer.
3 - Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2021
£171.00 case of 6: equivalent £28.50
Finesse, elegance and style. I do not know where in the world you would find a Syrah of this quality at this price point. Savoury flavours, with a hint of oak, black fruits abound with light tannins balanced to perfection, and a long finish. Beef tagliata with cherry tomatoes and a rocket salad would be an excellent base for a long Sunday lunch. Perhaps decant about an hour before serving would just allow a few more flavours to showcase how this wine shines. It will last and evolve comfortably into the early 2030s.
