Pazo de Señorans, Rias Baixas Albariño, 2023

Spain, Rias Baixas. 100% Albariño.

1989 saw this property launch its first vintage, and it has built a formidable reputation, with Berry’s stating, ‘now seen as the very best Galician winery’. Whatever the accolades, this family owned property seems to be creating a collection of exceptional wines, with Parker not dropping below 90 for their range over the last decade. With a maritime climate - warm summers and mild winters - Rías Baixas borders the Atlantic cost and is Spain’s most westerly wine region.

With around 95 per cent of production in this region coming from the Albariño grape, it is well suited to the damp climate, having thick skins that make it less prone to damage from rot. Given that the rainfall is an ongoing aspect throughout the year, this is an important factor. The rains can hit the region before the start of the harvest and vintage variation can be a significant factor.

Flavours of green apples, lemons, limes and peaches, are superbly balanced. This has a refinement that puts it into another category alongside any other Albariño that I have ever tasted. The texture is rich and very refined, and elegant. Braised celery hearts might in a very creamy sauce work well here, as would any seafood.
